How does FriendCaller work?
FriendCaller does not require any software installation. It's a Java-based temporary browser applet that is loaded onto your browser when you log-in to www.FriendCaller.com or click on a call-invite link. Since FriendCaller does not require any installation, you can use it wherever you have access to the Internet. Essentially, you can now make web-based internet calls with the same convenience as writing an email.
Why can I call talk to anybody on the web and not only to FriendCaller users?
You can send a call invite-link to anybody you want to talk with. Since FriendCaller does not require any software installation, the recipient of your call-invite can call you immediately, even without registration. Of course, you can add any FriendCaller user to your contact list and talk to them whenever they are online.
What are the system requirements for FriendCaller?
FriendCaller works with browsers such as Internet Explorer 6+, Mozilla Firefox or Safari on Windows Vista/XP, MAC OS-X or Linux. FriendCaller uses the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 or higher that has been preinstalled on almost every PC since Q4/2004. Older PCs can be updated free on www.java.com. The PC must have an Internet connection and mic/speaker or a headset.
Why I’m prompted “please update your Java VM” when loading the applet?
The FriendCaller applet checks the installed Java Runtime Environment Version (JRE). If the version is too old you will be directed to update your JRE free on www.java.com. (Depending on your OS the JRE could be as well referred to as Java Virtual Machine, Virtual Machine, Java VM, JVM, VM, J2SE).
When loading the applet I’m prompted to trust the certificate issued by C2Call GmbH. What is this about?
FriendCaller needs to access your Microphone/Speaker/headset. Please select “trust” or “always trust”.
FriendCaller does not start or does not work. What could be wrong?
Ensure that your firewall and/or any active anti-virus programs allow FriendCaller to load. Set the security settings to “medium” or “low” and check the Java settings. Java script and JRE must be enabled. Then close and restart the browser. FriendCaller currently does not support calls through an Internet proxy.
Do I need to update FriendCaller when new features are added?
No, never. FriendCaller is a temporary applet that is loaded from the Internet with each session. If there is an updated version available you will automatically using it with your next call.
What VoIP technology you are using to connect the calls?
We are using SIP and proprietary technology.
Does FriendCaller support NAT?
Yes, Network Address Translation is often used by firewalls and routers to allow multiple devices to share a single public IP address.
Does FriendCaller support STUN and calls through Proxies?
Not yet. Both are not required in most environments. STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP through NATs) is a protocol for assisting devices behind a NAT firewall or router with their packet routing. We will implement STUN and Proxy support later.
